Will the Fed Cut Rates This Week? Insights from Efficient Lending

Tips on refinancing and purchasing when rates are coming down

With the Federal Reserve's upcoming meeting on September 17, 2025, the big question on everyone's mind is: Will the Fed cut rates tomorrow?
Conventional wisdom—and market expectations—suggests yes, with economists widely anticipating a rate cut of either 25 or 50 basis points. This could be the first cut since December 2024, potentially easing the federal funds rate from its current 4.25%-4.50% range.

A word of caution:

Fed rate cuts directly impact the Federal Funds Overnight Rate, not mortgage rates. More often than not, the mortgage market has already priced in an expected 25 basis point cut, so don't expect dramatic immediate drops in home loan rates.

The real market reaction will likely hinge on Chair Jerome Powell's comments during the Q&A and press conference.

If he signals more cuts on the horizon—perhaps two or three in 2025—that could spark a positive shift, benefiting refinancing and new purchases.
